TREASURE

The Philippines is not only rich in its beautiful scenery, culture or people, it also boasts of the diverse languages that make up Philippine history.

Kaugnay na larawan     Across the Philippines, approximately 130 indigenous languages are spoken. Annually, we celebrate United Nations to promote peace and cooperation around the world. For this year,  the United Nations theme is “Indigenous Languages Matter for Sustainable Development, Peace Building and Reconciliation” it emphasizes how indigenous languages plays a significant role in one nation’s culture. This is the primary reason why this year’s Buwan ng Wika also highlights indigenous languages.  According to Virgilio Almario, chair of the Filipino Language Commission,' 'Nais nating pagpugayan at patunayan na mahalagang bahagi ng ating pagkabansa ang 130 katutubong wika sa Filipinas.' Ibig sabihin,  ang bawat wika ay may sariling buhay, at nakapaloob sa buhay nito ang tradisyon ng maraming henerasyon ng mga Pilipino.

We all know that language is a very important factor and component of a stable nation. How can people understand each other without it? Because of languages, there is a national understanding. But we should note that Filipino culture cannot be created without the various indigenous languages. That is why this year's theme seeks to instill in the national consciousness the value and role of the different indigenous languages in building a nation of understanding.

This year’s theme simply highlights how we are really giving importance to the different indigenous languages around the globe as UNESCO also declared this year as International Year of the Indigenous Languages (IYIL).

Ultimately, native languages are a real treasure. In every corner of the country; Luzon, Visayas, or Mindanao, or even abroad, we can truly be proud of them. Iloko, Cebuano, Tagalog, and many more, are indigenous languages that reflect our personality, and our country.
